Drexel University's Department of Public Safety issued a campus wide alert Oct. 4 after a pattern of robberies and abductions emerged across Philadelphia. The victim hails a taxi with two males in the front, and after the victim enters the cab, the front seat passenger displays a handgun and demands cash, cell phones and forces the victim to withdraw money from an ATM.
The eighth annual Campus Philly Kick-Off event took place on Saturday, Sept. 29 on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway between 20 and 23 streets. The event is an effort by the city of Philadelphia to welcome college students back to the community. Held in late September after all Philadelphia college campuses go back into session, the Kick-Off is a medley of music, culture and entertainment designed to showcase Philadelphia's highlights.
Student organizations can now receive up to $250 toward event fees from the $25,000 Student Organization Supplemental Event Grant that was established at the start of the academic year, according to a University press release issued Oct. 3. Organizations recognized by the Office of Campus Activities can use the money to pay for setup and breakdown fees, electricians, shipping and receiving, and custodial and grounds needs, the press release wrote.

As the Oct. 30 Democratic Presidential debate approaches, the University is helping students become involved with the political process through the implementation of an election task force. The Office of the Provost has announced a web site, named "Blue Line," containing everything from tutorials on using Drexel One to finding places to eat. Toni Torres, executive director of academic advising and retention and diversity for the Provost's Office, explained that a goal of the Blue Line web site is to make services easily accessible to students.
Students pied the brothers of Alpha Epsilon Pi on Sept. 29 at "AEPi in Your Eye" to raise money for the Darfur genocide. Several brothers volunteered to stand in front of the Mario the Magnificent statue to be pied in the face by anyone who passed them for one dollar.
Lynne Raju of the Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County spoke about understanding and preventing dating and domestic abuse at the first Violence Information and Education for Women (VIEW) meeting on Oct. 3. Raju, a former intern of DAP and a fourth year psychology major at Temple University, stressed that students, especially those who are college-aged, should be educated in abuse.
SEPTA instituted new fares that require regional rail passengers to pay higher onboard fares. Tokens will now cost $1.45, up 15 cents. Transfers will cost 75 cents. Cash rates will remain $2. The plan was enacted even though 75 of SEPTA's 153 rail stations do not offer ticket sales, and many of those that do have limited operating hours.
