Drexel opens Second Life campus

The next time you log in to Second Life, the 3-D virtual world run by its residents, you might run in to a Drexel professor teaching a course. The University bought land on Second Life, May 9. The property has been named Drexel Island and cost about $900 to purchase plus an additional $150 per month for maintenance, according to Jean-Claude Bradley, E-Learning Coordinator for the College of Arts and Sciences.

iSchool receives $2.5M to improve library technology

The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced the recipients of its June 2007 Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Grant. Of the 43 grants awarded, two have been received by Drexel totaling $1,605,578 and will be matched by the University with an amount of $976,618 with the total amount reaching more than $2.

Student architect projects come to life on campus

If you pass the front entrance to Nesbitt or walk by the front of the Disque and Stratton buildings you might notice the Department of Architecture's Design and Build course projects that were finished at the end of spring term. The class was given two projects the University allowed them to design and then built on campus.

Harrisburg promises $7 million to Drexel

Drexel University received $7,002,000 from the state on July 17, after Governor Ed Rendell signed Senate Bill 933 into law. The aid is an annual appropriation that is provided to Pennsylvania's eight "private state-aided" schools. According to Michael Race, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the state annually provides aid first for its fourteen state schools, which include Kutztown, Bloomsburg, and Clarion, then aid for its "state-related" schools, which include Penn State and Temple University, and then finally, aid for its "private state-aided" schools, which includes Drexel and University of Pennsylvania.

Mostov tapped to head Office of International Programs

Julie Mostov has been selected to lead the newly created Office of International Programs, as part of the University's strategic plan to develop international presence. Mostov, who was previously the director of the International Area Studies and Women's Studies programs at Drexel will hold the title of Associate Vice Provost for International Programs.

Papadakis attends U.S.-Brazil Summit

University President Constantine Papadakis was in Brasilia, Brazil from July 11 to 12 to take part in the first ever U.S.-Brazil Innovation Summit. There, representatives from the U.S. and Brazilian government, corporations and higher education met to discuss and present a plan for long-term economic prosperity between the countries.

Public Safety issues University-wide Alert

Drexel Public Safety issued a University-wide alert June 17 after two students were assaulted at off-campus locations in the vicinity of Hamilton and Spring Garden Sts., west of 34 St. The assaults, which are attributed to juveniles allegedly ranging from ages nine to 16, are linked to a number of incidents around Drexel and the University of Pennsylvania's campus.
