AIDS Fund, an outreach organization that provides financial support to HIV/AIDS education and prevention programs, held its annual AIDS Walk Philly fundraising campaign Oct. 16 in an effort to raise money and awareness of the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic. Originally organized by members of the gay and lesbian community, the AIDS Philly campaign has grown extensively since its conception nearly two decades ago, with the first walkathon campaign in 1987 raising $33,000.
Students filled Stein Auditorium Oct. 20 to attend panel discussion and fund raiser, "The Politics of Disaster: Considering Ethics, Engineering, and Public Health in the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina", sponsored by the Pennoni Honors College. Panelists included History and Politics Assistant Professor Scott Knowles, Department of English and Philosophy Associate Professor Mark Manion, Department of Economics and International Business Professor Roger McCain, Associate Professor of School of Public Health Peter Rumm, Assistant Professor of Department of Culture and Communication Diane Sicotte, Professor and Chair Department of Community Health and Prevention Lisa Ulmer, Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Joseph Wartman.
The 2005 hurricane season can be easily likened to the best armies in history-it has plenty of power, large numbers and has wreaked havoc on humans all across the Atlantic basin. Hurricane Wilma, the season's 21st named storm, quickly strengthened into the most powerful hurricane ever on record.
Originally, I was going to write something about UFOs this week, since it seems like that's what the people want to read, and something about ghosts not being real next week. On the other hand, it occurred to me that I'd look like one big Halloween party pooper if I did that, so my regular tripe on UFOs will have to wait till next week.
