Fire displaces nine students

House catches fire after short circuit; no alarm

An electrical fire consumed part of a three-story house on the intersection of 33rd and Hamilton streets the night of April 6. The building's two residences were home to nine Drexel University international students, who escaped without injury. The fire, the result of electrical short-circuiting, started in the basement of the house.

Interim Provost to return as dean of Goodwin College of Professional Studies

University of Michigan Engineering Dean Stephen W. Director was appointed provost of Drexel University effective July 1, marking the end of a year-long nationwide search. The announcement was made by University President Constantine Papadakis March 23, ending Interim Provost Ali Houshmand's tenure that will have spanned 18 months come July.

The Newman Center has spent this past week honoring the life and mourning the death of Pope John Paul II through prayer services held twice daily throughout the week. Father William Grogan, chaplain of the Newman Center at Drexel, has led the Drexel community in prayer at the Saint Katherine Drexel Chapel.

School of Public Health launches "Lighten Up Philly" campaign

Drexel's School of Public Health celebrated National Public Health Week April 4-10 with this year's "Lighten Up Philly" campaign aimed at lowering obesity levels in the City of Philadelphia. The campaign is the SPH's response to Men's Health magazine's ranking of Philadelphia as the second-fattest city in the country following Houston, Texas.

CoMAD professor receives third Emmy nomination

College of Media Arts and Design Assistant Professor of Performing Arts Jim Klein was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for his musical compositions for the hit ABC soap opera All My Children. He earned his third nomination in the category "Best Composition and Music Supervision on a Daytime Drama Series," for which he won the Emmy in 2003.

Ten days, four states, one spring break mission: service

Every year during spring break, the Office of Campus Activities and Service Organization Summit put together a week-long community service program, called Alternative Spring Break, for the students at Drexel to get involved in. Not only are these service projects an alternative to the usual week long collegiate spring break trips to places like Cancun and Panama City Beach, but they also provide students the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives and the community itself.

Drexel University's School of Education was ranked 66 out of 190 surveyed schools nationwide in the U.S. News & World Report annual ranking of America's best graduate schools for 2006. This is the first year that the School of Education has received a rank in this list of top graduate schools.

Freshman wins Division of Student Life logo contest

The Division of Student Life and the Office of the Dean of Students announced the winner of their logo contest this week. Freshman Business Admin-istration major Derek Kim was awarded $500 for his new design which will be used for various Division of Student Life functions.
