New provost announced: Stephen Director

Houshmand will continue as Dean of Goodwin College

University President Constantine Papadakis announced Dr. Stephen W. Director as the new provost effective July 1. Director is the dean of the college of engineering at the University of Michigan and a professor of electrical and computer engineering since 1986.

Incoming SoE students to receive free iPods

The School of Education will provide a free iPod for each of its incoming freshman students in the 2005-2006 academic year. "The iPod is a wildly popular piece of technology for entertainment, but it also has a myriad of other potential uses," Director of Marketing and Recruitment for the School of Education Dan Hanson said, "We are giving these iPods in line to one of our primary missions for the school.

Student lights fire in Kelly elevator

An incident reported as arson occurred at Kelly Hall March 10. Director of Public Safety Bernard Gollotti commented on the incident, saying that a student lit a "poster" or "some sort of paper" on fire in an elevator in the residence halls. Reports from students indicate that the building was evacuated and that the Fire Marshal was called in to investigate.

Radio Y100 off airwaves, alive in hearts of supporters

A rally was held March 5 at the Philadelphia Art Museum by over 500 supporters of the city's last alternative rock station. Former Y100 DJs and fans spoke to the crowd and letters were read from bands showing their support including 311, G. Love and Garbage, while the event was covered by local stations NBC10, WB17, and FOX29.

USGA hosts Law School discussion

Senior Vice President and General Counsel Carl "Tobey" Oxholm discussed the University's plans for the creation of a law school by September 2006 at a meeting of the Undergraduate Student Government Association March 7.

U. Crossings changes security guards

In an attempt to correct security problems at University Crossings, Philadelphia Management has contracted The Petruzzi Detective Agency Inc., to "improve and tighten the current security situation at the building," according to a letter released to all residents Feb.

SEPTA strike delayed, more funds approved

April 15 will be the new date of a strike for more than 5,000 workers of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. The original date was set for March 15, however the head of the Transport Workers Union Local 234 Jeff Brooks, accepted a one-month extension offered by SEPTA to give riders some relief.

IFC wins four awards, recognition at national conference

Four awards were presented to Drexel's Interfraternity Council at the Northeast Regional Conference March 5. "They are a great recognition for all the hard work the IFC officers and chapters have done over the past year," IFC President John Dougherty, said.

University reiterates final exam policies

Students received an e-mail outlining University policy for final examinations from the Provost's office March 9. The announcement came from Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Jacques Catudal. Catudal stated that an unusually high number of complaints about policy violations warranted clarification because some individuals may not be aware of University policy.

Five students robbed at gunpoint

Five students were robbed at gunpoint on the eve of March 7. The students, four males and one female, were sitting on benches at a park near the corner of 35th Street and Powelton Avenue when they were approached by three black males of median height and build at 11:43 p.

Securities and Exchange Commissioner speaks at LeBow

Cynthia Glassman, a commissioner for the Securities and Exchange Commission, spoke at the University March 8. Glassman, a guest of the LeBow College of Business, spoke to a group of about 60 in the Matheson building and focused mainly on the topics of government regulation of business and the role the government should play in an economic landscape which has been rocked by a series of high profile scandals over the last several years.

World Café Live hosts Social Security reform policy rally

Senators Richard Durbin, D-Ill., Byron Dorgan, D-N.Dak., Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., and Harry Reid, D-Nev., held a rally against President George Bush's Social Security reform policy March 4 at the World Café Live, located on 3025 Walnut Street. The Philadelphia stop is part of nationwide campaign titled "Strengthen Social Security: Fix it, Don't Nix It" designed to fight against Bush's call for privatizing Social Security.
