While SP2 - at the time of this writing - is still not available through Windows Update, anxious technophiles, developers and enthusiasts can download the corporate version of SP2 directly from the MS site.

Yahoo! instant messaging software patch released

Yahoo, Inc. released a security patch last week in an attempt to fix vulnerability in its latest instant messaging software. The patch fixes a hole in Yahoo's use of the portable network graphics (PNG) format. The patch was released Aug. 12. Users were urged to download the patch immediately when they signed on to the service.

Microsoft SP2 release delayed by security threats within pack

In a series of continuing twists, Microsoft has now announced that their Internet release of Service Pack 2 will be delayed in light of serious complaints from current users who have installed it. Users can only install SP2 through Windows Update Services (WUS).

Embryonic stem cell license in Britain; chromatin transfer produces calico cats in U.S.

The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority License Committee in Britain issued its first human cloning license as a method to produce embryonic stem cells Aug. 11. In 2001, Britain was the first country to authorize the procedure. According to the legislation, stem cells can only be harvested up to two weeks after the embryo is formed.
